The Return
The Colour Run South Africa
How The Colour Run Event Works
It’s all about about having the time of your life, The Colour Run is a five-kilometer, un-timed event in which thousands of participants, or “Colour Runners”, are doused from head to toe in different colours at each kilometer. With only two rules, the idea is easy to follow:
- Wear white at the starting line!
- Finish plastered in colour!
After Colour Runners complete the race, the fun continues with an unforgettable Finish Festival. This larger than life party is equipped with music, dancing and massive colour throws, which create millions of vivid colour combinations. Trust us, this is the best post-5k party on the planet!

Frequently asked questions
Oh my goodness, NO. There are plenty of other great 5ks out there to test speed and performance. The Colour Run event is all about a colour crazy day with friends and family. You can run, walk, crawl, or cartwheel if you wish!
For our first event after Covid-19 restrictions, each registered runner will receive the 2021 limited edition The Return Participant Kit complete with a race t-shirt, medal, powder pack, race number, the run, finish festival and more! 🙂
On one condition…if you are prepared to be one of the hippest moms/dads/aunts and uncles on the planet! If they can cover (running, jogging, walking, or strolling) the 5km of The Colour Run course, they can absolutely participate in The Colour Run!
All kiddies under 2 always run free with us. They do need to be registered at the time of booking and they will need to be wearing a safety wristband that can be collected at Race Pack Pick Up. There are a limited number of places for free runners per event.
For the safety of our runners and animal friends, we do not allow animals at any of our races
Details on when and where the Check-In Party will be are posted to Social Media pages during the week of the race as well as emailed to all registered runners approximately 3 days before the event.
You bet! As long as you send them with a printed or electronic copy of your confirmation email with the QR code on it!
You will see smiling faces along the course whose main goal is to douse you in colourful powder to ensure that you look like you ran through a beautiful rainbow by the time you cross the finish line.
The health and safety of our participants and our employees has always been at the forefront of our minds and actions. As a professional events company with highly vetted policies and processes, we conduct thorough testing to ensure the safety of our materials and their application.
At the Finish Festival, the crowd will be involved in a colour throw every 15 minutes to welcome new runners coming in. We provide one bag of colour for each runner as you cross the finish line and more packets can be purchased on race day.
The colour does mostly wash out after the event. As with anything dirty, the sooner you wash it the better. We suggest wearing items that you wouldn’t mind getting colourful.
Most people bring some towels for the insides of their cars, or a change of clothes just in case. If you’re running some pearly white leather interior you might need to plan ahead!
The colour powder used at The Colour Run event is all certified non-toxic and free of any heavy metals. Our bright colours are a combination of cornstarch, baking soda, and FD&C dyes. As with any substance, you want to keep it out of your eyes and our “certified” colour throwers make sure to aim low as you pass by. Some Colour Runners opt to wear glasses or goggles for their eyes and use a bandana or face mask for their mouths, masks is compulsory Covid-19 regulation.
Absolutely. We will have The Colour Run powder packets available first come/first serve for everyone to purchase at The Colour Run Store. You may want to warn them though… they ain’t coming out of The Colour Run party clean! Some locations, where we’re capped by the council, mean we might have to charge for spectators.
Our race photographers are generally fine shooting from a medium distance of 20meter, but to be totally safe we always recommend covering cameras/phones with a protective dust wrap. Those colourful powder particles are sneaky and The Colour Run is not liable for any damage that might be done to your camera!
The Colour Run 5k is not a timed event. Runners tend to take their sweet time out there and we realized no one really cares about their speed We suggest self-timing for anyone desiring a finish time.
If an event is held as advertised, we cannot issue refunds. The logistics of setting up and planning the event make it impossible. Just make sure you are good to go before signing up. If for some reason you can’t make it to race day, at least come to the Check-In Party, pick up your gear, and say hi to us!
You can swap out your ticket by contacting TixSA on support@tixsa.co.za or visiting the Ticketing Desk at Race Pack Pick Up.
It’s totally up to what you and your doctor decide. We see a lot of pregnant runners at our races and they are the cutest ones out there! The powder is all certified non-toxic. We recommend wearing sunglasses or goggles, and a bandana over your mouth and nose in the colour zones just for extra protection.
A little rain won’t stop The Funnest 5k! It even makes the colour brighter! If there are major weather warnings in your city during the weekend of the event.
